The September 2007 Newsletter is about planning for succession.
Peter Drucker says that developing competent successors is an “elementary responsibility which a business enterprise owes to society.” However, he differentiates management development from “replacement planning” an activity he argues is a “useless exercise” that “may even do harm.”
Developing others is a planful but not a programmed activity. The starting point is to create a developmental mind-set within organizations, to build a spirit and practice of mentoring and coaching, and to implement management systems and practices that support them.
Succession planning also requires an attitude adjustment: one in which we are not only willing to teach others but also to learn from them (including our potential successors).
