Professional athletes have recovery rituals to enable them to regain control, energy, and focus. How about you?
The theme of the June 2007 newsletter is that if we want to perform at peak levels, we too need to build in recovery periods. A long, sustained, uninterrupted outflow of energy doesn't result in increased output but decreased efficiency and eventually staleness, if not burnout. It may sound counter-intuitive, but hobbies, vacations, and mini-vacations are important for you and your staff -- especially if you care about peak performance.
As a manager, you should plan breaks from routine and provide opportunities for people to take pleasure in what has been accomplished and defer for a while thinking about the obstacles that lie ahead. Their renewed energy will take you and your organization further than determined but unremitting slogging ever will.
