The August 2007 Newsletter is about helping new executives succeed.
The tips and guidelines in this issue actually apply to any manager or executive but are particularly critical for those just assuming a new position. A promotion challenges new executives to come to grips with their direct responsibilities. Nevertheless, I urge their supervisors to help them see their roles in a broader context. They will be able to make better decisions, organize and allocate resources better, and adapt to changing circumstances if they do so with reference to the needs and priorities of the larger system of which they are part.
Therefore, those who supervise new executives need to start from day one by sharing their own thinking, issues, and opportunities in open dialogue. Supervisors also need to test and challenge the frames of reference used by new executives until thinking one level up becomes second nature.
The newsletter fleshes out this idea and also provides references for applications of this principle.
